As we go about our busy day we often use our mobile phone several times. It may be for fun or it may be work related. All around us people are using them to be able to make their life easier. We live in a very fast paced world so everything we can do in regards to multi tasking is appreciated. Regardless of where you go these days you will see plenty of mobile phones in action.

Have you every stopped to wonder though how mobile phones came to be? The history of them is quite fascinating. You will realize that the technology we have today is relatively new. The introduction of them more than 20 years ago is very different than what we get today. Understanding where mobile phones stem form may give you a whole new appreciation for them.

It is funny to think that most of our children have never had to put change into a pay phone to make a call. The concepts for mobile phones didnt just appear one day though. They are the result of ongoing progress in the areas of both science and technology that started more than two centuries ago. Back then they never would have imagined that we would be using mobile phones in the way that we do today.

The Background of Mobile Communications

There arent too many people out there that arent familiar with Morse Code. Yet there are plenty that dont make the connection between it and mobile communications. The efforts of Samuel Morse helped to pave the way for this to take shape. His invention took place in 1832. Most people refer to it as the telegraph but it is formally called the electromagnetic telegraph.

After a few years of perfecting his concept he was ready to introduce it to the public. The city of New York was the first to implement it in 1835. Yet it didnt take very long before places all over the world were using it as well. The process allowed for messages to be tapped into the equipment and transmitted to other locations. This was much faster and cost effective than the postal service at that time. You have to remember that they used men on horses to deliver such communications to the right location.

The use of Morse Code involves tapping in various sequences in order to replicate a code for letters of the alphabet. It didnt take long for communications to explode with the use of this device. Morse Code became well used in military operations as well. Yet this was just the tip of the iceberg for the world of communications.

However, it did open up the eyes of people all over the world about the possibilities. There were plenty of plans put into action so that research could be done. This way more could be developed in the way of communications. Who would of though it would one day lead to mobile phone communications that we use now everyday?

The Ability to Transfer Communications over Wires
We take wires for granted today with the technology we have. It is what allows us to benefit from our mobile phones though. This technology was difficult to devise though as it took more than half a century for it to fall into place. During that time plenty of research was taking place though to help move such ideas forward. There were quite a few amazing men that worked very hard throughout the 1840s to 1860s to come up with great ideas.

Alexander Graham Bell is the one written in history as the inventor of the telephone. While he did do so, he wasnt the only one engaging in such research. A man by the name of Innocenzo Manzetti developed an idea for the speaking telegraph in 1844. Yet he didnt go forward with the idea. Not because it wasnt a great one, but because he chose to follow other ideas he was developing. This is where Bell stepped in and the rest is history as we know it on the subject.

The use of the First Telephone

People all over the world were quite impressed when the first telephones were offered. They testing for them began in 1876 and once it was determine how far the messages could carry there was an explosion of getting them implemented all over the world. Plenty of investors had backed Bell during all his experiments on the telephone. The time was now upon them to get their return on such a grand investment.

Yet it took through the 1950s to get all of the various wires into place for people to be able to place calls from one point of the world to any other. The first locations to have such technology in place include the United States, Canada, and Europe. Exchanges were given to help identify the location for each calling area. This form of communication opened up amazing opportunities for people.

Pay phones became a popular attraction in many areas. Those that couldnt afford to have a home telephone could go place coins in them for a few minutes of operation. This wasnt as impressive as the middle and upper class families with telephones in their homes but it was a way to communicate with this new technology. It was this combination of technology that paved the way for the world of mobile phones to soon emerge.

The Concept of the Mobile Phone

The concept of the mobile phone was actually an accident and a very interesting story. A man by the name of Martin Cooper was employed by the communication giant Motorola. In 1954 he was asked to head up a project to develop portable radios that used cellular technology. Little did he know at the time what he was on to. He found out that these devices they were working on could help to transmit voices.

He asked the Motorola company to consider using these devices as a way to improve communications in house. Soon the various employees at the company had them in order to communicate with other employees. The public was able to get a good glimpse of them when many law enforcement agencies started to ask Motorola for them. They felt this was a great tool to enhance the capabilities of their police officers.

From this concept the very first mobile phone was created by Motorola. It was put into use in 1973. This wasnt the type of mobile phone you could place in your purse or pocket though. Instead it was a very large device that most owners left in their vehicle. It was heavy too at about 2 pounds. It was only used for emergency purposes as the charge barely lasted more than 30 minutes.

This first mobile phone was called the Dyna-Tac and it was very basic. It only allowed you to get and receive calls. There were plenty of locations where it was hard to get good reception on this early mobile phone. Motorola didnt rush to sell them to the general public at this time. Instead they did offer them to certain business executives. They also got plenty of requests for them by the rich and famous.

By the early 1980s Motorola was confident enough to offer these mobile phones to the general consumers. While they were fascinated with them, they werent able to pay $3,500 for one. That is why they were only found with the rich and the famous most of the time. Those that did buy them did so mainly for the social status that it could offer them and nothing more.

Mobile Phones in Modern Times

When we see mobile phones in modern times it is easy to forget where they have derived from. In the 1990s the size and the styles of mobile phones significantly improved. They got smaller and at the same time they became much more affordable. Those that had an interest in them before now started to buy them. As the consumer demand for mobile phones increased so did the number of companies offering them.

As is common in the world of business, they had to think of ways to get consumers to buy their models. So they offered incentives including great service plans, better features, and unique designs. Those models of cell phones allowed a person to download games and offered voicemail. They also gave way to the text messaging phenomenon.

For the person that wants an all in one mobile phone it is available. You can get those that also allow you to go online, to download documents, play music, and even take pictures. With such a well made mobile phone a person doesnt have to miss out on anything when they are on the go. You can be sure more advanced models of mobile phones will continue to be introduced as time goes on.
