Imagine if you will, it's Christmas Time. You just got home from the mall, which normally wouldn't have an adverse affect on you, but has made you uncomfortably cranky this time.

Imagine if you will, it's Christmas Time. You just got home from the mall, which normally wouldn't have an adverse affect on you, but has made you uncomfortably cranky this time. You reach into your pocket to pull out your house key only to notice an empty space where the key should have been. Take some time to let that idea sink in and the feeling really hit you. It's not good. So here's a few tips to keep yourself from ending up in this situation. Start by being sure you have a reliable lock on your door. Whether it's a deadbolt or a master keyed lock, be sure it remains in working order and that your key still fits and turns it with ease. Once you start noticing difficulty in the unlocking process, that is when you should immediately start looking into options for replacing that lock. There are plenty of hardware store associates who will give you tips and sell you the correct parts for your lock, or even suggest a new lock that would fit your needs. Do not be afraid to ask someone for help if you get to a point where you can't figure the rest out, as your home security is a definite priority. Most people find, however, that they are easily able to replace their own lock with just
a few simple tools and instructions. Once you've successfully changed out your lock, the next step is to make multiple spare keys to avoid having to call a locksmith to enter your own house if your main key is misplaced. Have a house meeting with the occupants of your house to determine the best hiding spots for your spare keys. Avoid picking obvious places such as under the mat or a fake rock that looks completely out of place on your front porch. Also suggest to your household that everyone keeps a house key on the same keychain that their car keys are on. Normally this will avoid leaving just the house key inside while going to your car to retrieve something or go on an errand. The money and heartache that you will save in the long run after following these simple steps will be a lifesaver. Personal security should be a high priority in your life, as well as protecting those who live in the house with you. Maintaining a lock that is in working order and replacing those that aren't will give you the comfort of knowing that you and your loved ones are safe. Doing the project yourself also gives you a sense of accomplishment and saves you plenty of money to do with what you please.
