Learn some basic home security options and terms to help you get started in making your home a safer place.

If you are thinking about buying your first security system then you are taking a strong first step. You are one step closer to achieving peace of mind for you and your family. However, in order to get the best out of it as possible you should take some time to understand just what the different options are and which one is suitable for you. A Quick Guide to Home Security Features: Alarm - You can find systems that include an alarm that triggers the recording. CCTV - This stands for closed circuit television and means that the system transmits its data through a closed circuit of electricity cables or via a wireless transmitter. Day/ Night Cameras - These are cameras that work both in daytime and at night, meaning that they can still record images even when the light is extremely low. This is very useful for poorly lit areas. Infrared - This is what is used in night vision cameras that enables them to pick up images. Infrared Cameras are the cameras that form images from this type of technology rather than using light as in traditional cameras. Micro Cameras - These are extremely small, often referred to as hidden cameras as they can be hidden in objects and are practically undetectable to someone who does not know they are there. FPS - This stands for frames per second and is to do with the recording quality of the camera: the number of images that are captured per second to form the video. Lens - The lens is important as it determines the quality of the image and how far the camera can record. Different lenses will produce different recording results, including different views and angles depending on the product. Motion Detection - This is a special feature of cameras that allows the recording to be
triggered by any movement in the camera's line of sight. This can prove extremely useful and means the camera will only record when it has been triggered. Housing - This is what is used to house the video camera. This material can range in quality and some are more suitable for indoors, some for outdoors. Resolution - This means the quality of the image, and the higher the resolution the better quality the images will be. Plug and Play - This means that the camera system is easy to install. It is instantly recognized when it is connected to the main control system and you will not need to set it up manually. Monitor - This is where you can view the images that are captured on your security camera. This may be a standalone monitor or it could be a computer screen where your images are recorded. Remote Surveillance - This gives you the ability to view your images when you are not even at home. This is often done by live internet streaming, and can include special alerts to tell you when any alarms or sensors have been triggered. Wireless - This means that you can install your camera with the benefit of no wires to clutter your home. These can be the same as normal cameras but they use a transmitter to receive all of the images. Outdoor Cameras - These capture images like any other camera except for the fact that they are designed for outdoor use. They are made from durable materials and are weatherproof. These are the most common terms you will come across when shopping for a new home security system. There may be other options available, but the most important thing is to do your research before you decide to buy. It is important you know exactly what they mean to know how you can best protect your home.
