Apparently, many of the fires that start late at night, are as a result of people coming back from an alcohol filled night of enjoyment. The problem is so bad, that the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service have been forced to issue islanders with advice on how to stay safe.
Most late night fires are started in the kitchen. This can be through chip pan fires, as we all know chips are a favourite late night snack, or ovens and grill-pans catching alight. Once a kitchen fire starts, it does not take too long for it to become completely out of control and a threat to the whole of a house.
Carl Kinvig is a Station Officer on the Isle of Man and he has commented on the fact that an alarming number of late night fires are kitchen based. Many people that have been drinking, have an impaired judgement and this can ultimately lead to the type of kitchen fires that the Fire and Rescue Service are all too familiar with having to sort out.
The best advice, to try and prevent this type of horrendous situation from developing, would be to ensure that you refrain from using any cooking appliances when you have been drinking. A lot of people may feel that they are s
afe and that they would never cause a kitchen fire within the home, but you should remember that if you have been consuming alcohol, your judgement will not be the same.
Home fire extinguishers are a very good idea and could potentially be life-saving fire safety equipment. For chip pan fires, the best type of fire extinguisher would be a wet chemical extinguisher. Generally though, CO2 provides the home with an ideal extinguisher which will be ideal for use on most types of fire. This would include electrical fires. Fire blankets can also provide excellent fire protection.
Your home should be fitted with smoke alarms that are in good working order. Ensure that you test the batteries on the alarm at least once a week. As this piece of fire safety equipment may well save your life one day.
Kitchen fires are preventable if you make sure that you do not provide them with any ammunition to get started in the first place. Instead of deciding to cook, when you get back after a late night out, perhaps you could stop off and get a takeaway on the way home? At least that way you will know that you will only have the one hangover to deal with in the morning!
