I think it's becoming increasing apparent, at least here in the UK, that less and less people are watching TV shows when they are actually broadcast on TV. It's easy to see why because in this day and age you really don't need to watch them live any more.
There are many reasons why this is the case. The first is simply because most of us now lead extremely busy lives. So with entire series of television shows lasting weeks or even months in the case of a lot of US shows, most of us do not have the time to sit down at a scheduled time every week to commit to a particular show.
In fact this is a major reason why DVD box sets have become so popular. Now if you want to watch a series of Lost or every single episode of The Sopranos or Seinfeld, for instance, you can just buy the whole series on DVD and watch it at your own convenience. The price of DVDs has come down a lot in recent years so for most people they are now very affordable, and certainly a lot preferable to watching them on TV where you have to sit though endless commercial breaks.
If you don't want to pay any money t
o watch your favourite TV shows, you still have plenty of other options as well. For instance you can use the good old video recorder to tape your favourite shows or you could use more modern technology such as a DVD recorder or a hard disc recorder. This will allow you to watch them at a later date when it is most convenient for you.
Catch up services on the internet are also becoming increasingly popular. I can't speak for other countries but here in the UK you can watch pretty much any TV program broadcast on one of the terrestrial channels at a later date thanks to the BBC iPlayer and the similar services that are offered by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. So this allows you to watch your favourite shows at any time of the day and it's just a click of the mouse away because you can watch them online rather than having to download them.
So to sum up, I think the days of having to schedule your evenings around particular TV shows are long gone. It's now much easier simply to record them, watch them at a later date online, or failing that, buy them when they are released on DVD.
