Kevin Lyman created the Warped Tour in 1993 after the idea was hatched while he worked on several skateboarding shows and shoe manufacturer (and skater favorite) Vans began sponsoring the festival in 1995. The name for the festival comes from the short-lived Transworld-published magazine Warp, which combined surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and music.
Warped Tour has had as many as 100 bands each summer over the years at various venues across the nation on several stages. Although it started out playing primarily ska and skate punk bands, the Vans Warped Tour now boasts a lineup that spans metalcore, punk rock, post-hardcore and more. In 1998 the festival went international and now travels to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe. Although
the main attraction at the Vans Warped Tour is the music, the festival also boasts many attractions for patrons like a half pipe for bikers and skaters and booths for bands selling merchandise, independent record labels, magazine publishers, non-profit organizations and sponsors.
Last year the Vans Warped Tour suffered from the flailing economy like virtually every other industry, with creator Kevin Lyman stating that "sales were down almost 25% form 2007" when the tour began in Southern California. Although Lyman was initially worried he said, "When things got tight, I stood my ground and said I believed in the package and the tour and things would turn around and they did. What turned around was your excitement for the bands we booked." In 2009 the Warped Tour will downsize from its usually two main stages to one but all of the side stages will remain.
Vans Warped Tour creator Kevin Lyman explained the change to LiveDaily, saying, "Many of these bands have been around for a long time and have many songs to choose from so, this year, instead of limiting them to five or six songs, they will have 40 minutes to play all your favorite songs from the past and a couple new ones too." Lyman also revealed that he strove to keep ticket process low for the 2009 festival.
Even though the economy is perhaps more fragile than ever, fans will undoubtedly be turning up to see the show, especially with the 2009 lineup announced, so hurry up and get your Vans Warped Tour tickets soon!
