If you browse through the children's section of the various online retailers who sell DVDs, you will see a lot of the modern shows of course, but you will also see a lot of classic TV shows from the 60s, 70s and 80s. These are selling in great quantities and they are growing in popularity, so why is this?
Well it ultimately comes down to nostalgia. Most people in the western world have a fairly happy childhood and can look back at their early years with great fondness, and a large part of that happiness stemmed from TV. For most adults things like the internet, iPods and mobile phones hadn't been invented when they were younger so television was a major part of their lives.
Therefore it is only natural that we remember some of the classic TV shows that brought us so much happiness when we were younger. Now of course thanks to modern technology we can watch a lot of these shows all over again on DVD.
You will find that some of these shows look quite dated now when compared to modern shows, and some of the animation and production values are quite amateurish by today's standards, but for the most part you will f
ind that they will bring fond memories flooding back. Plus of course the very fact that these programs have not been digitally remastered in a lot of cases is actually a good thing because it's great to see them as they were originally broadcast.
Many adults are slightly reluctant to buy DVDs of their favourite TV shows from when they were younger, but if you have a young family of your own then you have a perfect excuse. A lot of these classic TV shows are timeless and so you will find that your children will enjoy them just as much as you did when you were a child. So you can innocently sit down with your family and quietly wallow in nostalgia whilst your kids are watching them at the same time.
Don't think you're the only adult that enjoys watching these shows either because you only need to go on Amazon, for example, to see that DVDs of old favourites such as The Clangers, Bagpuss, Thunderbirds and Stingray are selling in huge quantities, and it's certainly not the kids who are buying them. A lot of the classic shows are now available so you now have every opportunity to relive a large part of your childhood.
