It looks like even star power with a Broadway stage can't stop the most unfortunate events from happening, as the national touring Elle Woods, played by Becky Gulsvig, recently tripped backstage and broke a toe forcing her to send in the woman that made the Broadway role famous Laura Bell Bundy. Though patrons who hold Legally Blonde tickets are probably jumping for joy to see the sight of Bundy at her Tony nominated role, Gulsvig won't be lost forever. The critically acclaimed Broadway show will easily recover, as Bundy welcomes the role of Harvard law undergraduate that originally opened as a Hollywood film starring Reese Witherspoon. Even with a change of face, has remained updated with the best tickets for the next few shows in Michigan and elsewhere.
Gulsvig broke her toe January 8th during a performance at the Kennedy Center, and for the next six weeks Bundy and understudy Lauren Zakrin will alternate the role, beginning January 13th in East Lansing, Michigan. It saddens us that Becky will be out of the show for 6 weeks. However, with proper rest and care, she will make a full recovery. Under these circumstances, we are extremely fortunate to have these two amazingly talented actresses, who know this role inside and out, ready at a moment's notice to hit the stage," producer Mike Isaacson said in a statement. The national tour will continue to appear around the nation through September, finishing its engagement in Costa Mesa, CA, September 20th.
Though Bundy had a few prior engagements that coincided
with some tour dates, the current Nashville, Tennessee resident immediately flew to Washington, DC, the show's current location, to help out the cast and will make a few appearances before she plans on judging the Miss America pageant January 24th. I'm excited that I can help out," Bundy said in a statement. It's a great role, and one I'm extremely proud of. I'm looking forward to stepping back onto the stage and performing." Bundy debuted on Broadway in 2002 with Hairspray, playing Amber Von Tussle before moving to Wicked and Ruthless!, which she earned both Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations.
Legally Blonde: The Musical earned seven Tony nominations the year it premiered on Broadway (2007), ten Drama Desk Award nominations and a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award. The play gained even more commercial acclaim when MTV aired a special Legally Blonde: The Musical reality series where contestants auditioned for the leading role, Zakrin being one of those women (though not the winner). The show was nominated for two 2007-2008 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Legally Blonde: The Musical features several original songs that have been made into an album with Ghostlight records, Sh-K-Boom's imprint. The album featured some of the plays most revered songs including "Omigod You Guys," "Serious," "What You Want" and "Positive," and reached the number one spot on Billboard's Cast Album chart and number 86 on The Billboard Top 200. The score was written by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, with a book by Heather Hach.
