As international stars venture through the icy steets of Utah's famed location for the Sundance Film Festival, many entertain themselves throughout the event with the renowned American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) annual Music Cafe. This year, Wynonna, John Rzeznik (of the Goo Goo Dolls), Damien Rice, Rachael Yamagata, Gin Blossoms and Chad and Jeremy are set to perform this year.
"ASCAP is delighted to partner once again with the Sundance Film Festival to underscore the import role of music in film," said Sundance ASCAP Music producer Loretta Munoz. "Our goal at the Festival, and throughout the year, is to connect composers and songwriters with filmmakers and film and music executives. By combining a showcase for live performances of music with a forum for networking, we set the stage for the scores and soundtracks of the future." If you want to join in on the international classics that return to Park City, the this year for Sundance Film Festival tickets!
Without music, some of the greatest moments in film history wouldn't have been as magical, which is why the ASCAP have made it their mission for over ten years to celebrate the two artistic genres in one event. This year's, beginning January 16th, will perform for a week at The Star Bar. The original location, the Elks Building, proved to be too small as the years progressed, and forced the event to move in 2003.
The Music Cafe "is one of the most popular draws at the Sundance Film Festival. It is dedicated to showcasing the exceptional talent of new, emerging and established songwriters and artists, including solo acts and major bands, and is a place where indepen
dent filmmakers can meet and interact with film composers and songwriters to encourage collaboration between these two creative communities," says its website.
The Sundance Film Festival celebrates the unique works of both musical artists and filmmakers as they combine their talents at not only the film festival but in musical venues. The indie event has brought both film and musical stars to Utah as Sundance equally supports both artistic venues; Everything from a BMI composers' panel to indie music favorite films, including Spike Lee's Passing Strange and 2008's Academy Award winner for Best Original Song Once, the Sundance Institute and Film Festival have always opened their arms to the music community. The Music Cafe is one of the most popular events in January as musicians enhance their music with the fresh mountain air and get a chance to see mainstream success with the possibility of film composition or soundtrack work.
"Musicians are a fruitful and potent topic for documentarians," Caroline Libresco, the festival's senior programmer, said to Variety. "Music is a very rich and powerful subject matter than often reflects the zeitgeist."
Since 1985 The Sundance Film Festival has been the premiere US and international independent film showcase, presenting 120 full length films annually. Since the festival began it has brought the mainstream media some of its more powerful films, including Sex, Lies and Videotape, Maria Full of Grace, An Inconvenient Truth, Trouble the Water and Central Station. The Sundance Institute was established be legendary actor Robert Redford in 1981 and helps produce independent development for films and theatre.
