We love to find wonderful places that are slightly off the beaten trek- which, whilst significant in history, is not perpetually overrun by busloads of tourists- an obsession that is now shared by luxury travellers and those who seek to distinguish themselves from the stereotypical tourist. Cambodia, with the world famous Angkor Wat presents such a challenge. The best guides of course know the ways, times and points of entry where you’d be most likely to encounter the least number of tourists possible. Yet, there are many ‘off-the-beaten trek’ and lesser-known Khmer temples, which, due to the difficulty in access, are frequently places where you’d find few tourists. Like any world heritage site which receive greater numbers of tourists than is perhaps sustainable, travelling to the Angkor Wat in Cambodia poses a set of ethical questions. There are concerns about the Angkor Wat sinking’ due to the water levels- a problem exarcebated, and possibly initiated by mass tourism to the site, with hotels in Siem Reap frequently harvesting water directly to their hotels, leading to a lowering of water level in the Angkor site. Social problems brought about by tourism is frequently another cause of concern.
Siem Reap, as is typical of places receiving great numbers of tourists, offers a sophisticated array of boutique hotels which facilitate luxury travel- from the Amanresorts to the Hotel de la Paix, the latter a boutique hotel designed with such whimsical and charming Khmer influences to the colonial-influenced Heritage Suites. As the highlight of any tour to Cambodia would indeed be the Angkor Wat, it is important to get the best and most knowledgeable guides for the Angkor Wat. Activities surrounding your stay in Siem Reap would also be at its most varied- from dinners by Khmer temples to spa treatments in royal bathing pools, shopping for Khmer silks or witnessing the reconstruction of lost Khmer arts. Luxury travel in Cambodia, however, goes beyond just Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat but could also take in Phnom Penh, the beach resorts off Phnom Penh as well as luxury camping in areas of Cambodia where there are no suitable accommodation options. Cambodia also combines very well with Vietnam and the rest of Indochina.
