Opera's most recognizable tunes usually come from Puccini. La Rondine will open this month at the Met.
La Rondine opened at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York on January 7, 2009. The opera's title, translated into English is "The Swallow." Written by Giacomo Puccini in the 20th Century, the same man who is renowned for having written La boheme, Tosca, and Butterfly, containing much of the psychological drama that is present in Puccini's other work. The opera first opened in the US on March 10, 1928 in New York City.
This comic opera is the story of Magda, a Parisian lady of the night, who is kept by Rambaldo, a middle-aged gentleman who has given her a luxurious dwelling. The original cast stared Lucrezia Bori as Magda, with Beniamino Gigli in the part of Ruggero the young and innocent man from the country, Editha Fleischer played Lisette, and the poet Prunier was filled by Armand Tokatyan.
The opera was originally commissioned by a Viennese publisher in 1911, but an unsatisfactory libretto and the war got in the way and Puccini was unable to continue his relationship with a publisher whose country was an enemy of his own. The first performance of the work did not, therefore take place until March 27 of 1917, when it appeared on stage in Monte Carlo and subsequently was performed in cities throughout Italy. It does not take much speculation to assume that such a light-hearted work was much needed in post-war Italy, but it did not have the same fortune in Vienna where the opera failed to gain prominence.
When it first appeared in New York the opera was welcomed as an amusing and brilliant work by an esteemed composer. The tale of one man's love who runs away only to return again, and another man who finds love in the arms of the same woman only to lose her is one of passion and entertainment with plot twists as maid and mistress exchange places and sympathies in their quest through life. The first time the opera was in New York, much of the audience's amusement was born from the enjoyment of the actors and actresses, who are reported in the New York Times Review of the opera, as thoroughly enjoying the performance for themselves. If nothing else the opera proved categorically that Puccini was a master of capturing an audience and holding them in the palm of his hand.
Reported by predominantly positive reviews that the show received on its first ever appearance in New York, La Rondine is a fanciful and delightful opera that every audience that saw it seemed to enjoy immensely. So what will you get this year when you buy La Rondine tickets this year? A light-hearted and enjoyable opera, certainly, and a chance to see opera stars Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna performing at their very best. The opera will be playing from January 7 to February 26, so be sure to pick up your tickets soon, before they are all sold out.
