Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber has created many super successful shows. Jesus Christ Superstar hit the stage mixing Jesus and rock and roll, rather unexpected and controversial move for the time.

Jesus Christ Superstar was the first musical collaboration by this power-house duo to ever appear on stage, although there was a prior collaboration The Likes of Us which never appeared in theaters. Jesus Christ Superstar was first conceived when the two writers were commissioned by Alan Doggett, the head of music at Colt Court, who asked them to create an end-of-term religious play, the two writers created a "pop-cantata" version of Joseph. They had hit a stride with the religious theme and decided to once again raid the Bible for themes for their next musical and Jesus Christ Superstar was born. The musical first premiered in 1969 and was hugely successful, the musical went on to have huge success on London's West End and on Broadway. The work is centered around the last seven days of Jesus life, as told in the Bible. Though the musical was successful and popular in its time, there was a great deal of controversy that arose around it due to its comingling of religion and rock. However, since that time the musical has become an all-time favorite of both religious and non-religious types world-wide. The musical starts out with the song "Heaven on Their Minds" with the character of Judas singing "My mind is clearer now/At last all too well/I can see where we all will be./If you strip away the myth from the man/You will see where all soon will be. Jesus!" There is a building energy in the musical surrounding the song "Everything's Alright" contrasting the calmer themes that surround the character of Mary Magdalene with the fiercer energy of Judas. The middle of the musical builds from the song "Poor Jerusalem" when the character of Jesus sings the ending lines "While you live, your troubles are many, poor Jerusalem./To conquer death, you only have to die./You only have to die." It reaches a peak of passion with "The Temple" when Jesus throws the moneychangers and merchants out of the temple court. The key turning point in the musical is covered by the songs "Damned for all Time/Blood Money" sung by Judas, Annas, and Caiaphas; and "The Last Supper" sung by Jesus and the Apostles. From "The Last Supper" the rest of the musical leads ominously up to the final song "Crucifixion," where Jesus is hung on the cross. The musical ends with the character of Jesus singing the words "Father forgive them./The don't know what they're doing./My god, my God, why have you forgotten me?/Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit." The musical is a modern and touching portrayal of the last days of Jesus life as seen through the eyes of the Apostle Judas. Songs sung by Judas in the musical include "Heaven on their Minds," parts of "Strange and Mystifying," and parts from "Judas Death." The musical is now considered one of the most groundbreaking theatrical masterpieces of its time, and of its kind. It is also known as one of the most enduring and popular works ever created for the musical theater. Favorite songs from the musical are "Superstar," "Everything's Alright," and "I Don't Know How to Love Him."
